Getting started

Copy. Find. Paste.

Everything you need to use Klypto, including the guide to backups and recovery.

Your first clip

  1. Copy some text in any app with ⌘ C.
  2. Click Klypto in the menu bar, or press the default shortcut ⌘ ⇧ V.
  3. Search for a word and select the clip. Return to your document and press ⌘ V.

Automatic pasting is optional, in Settings → General. It needs macOS Accessibility permission. Capturing and manually pasting clips work without it. Change shortcuts in Settings → Shortcuts.

Find an image by its text

Searching text in images is optional and off by default (Settings → Privacy → Search text in images). OCR runs on this Mac for existing and new images, including archived images. Extracted text stays in the encrypted database and is used only for internal search. It is not sent to Spotlight or iCloud or included in Klypto backups. Disabling the option erases this index; deleting a clip deletes its indexed text. Undoing deletion can run OCR again if the option is still enabled. Images marked sensitive and known password-manager sources are excluded. Recognized keys, passwords and card numbers in OCR text are excluded before storage; detection remains imperfect. Use “Mark as sensitive” in the detail to exclude an image manually.

Indexing is progressive; progress and failures are shown. The detail displays recognized text and search matches. Images over 32 MiB are not analyzed automatically, decoding is limited to 4,096 pixels on the longest edge, and only the first 32,000 recognized characters are searchable (indicated in the detail). Blurry, small or unsupported-language images may produce incomplete results. Extract text remains available without enabling indexing. Copying the clip always preserves the original image.

Find a passage

Search includes the title, content and source app. In a text clip’s detail, the matching passage is highlighted and brought into view. Move between matches with the arrows or ⌘ G and ⇧ ⌘ G. When several search words form a phrase found in the text, that phrase takes priority. The counter adds a “+” beyond 2,000 matches. If only the title or source matches, the detail explains that there are no matches in the content. Clear the search to return to normal reading.

Undo a mistake

After an ordinary deletion, click Undo in the confirmation message. You can also use ⌘ Z or the Edit menu to undo deleting clips, moving them to a space, renaming a title or archiving. ⇧ ⌘ Z redoes an undone action. In a text field, these shortcuts apply to typing.

Undo preserves attachments, chosen titles and clip assignments. It is available during the session, within the recent-action and memory limits. Locking or quitting the app clears this history. Delete permanently, clearing history or archives, and burn-after-read remain irreversible and reset undo history. If reversing an action would overwrite a newer change, it is refused with an explanation.

Organize when you need to

Pin frequently used clips. New installs start with a simple workspace. Enable Spaces, Sessions, Timeline and AI Rewrite in Settings → General → Advanced. Existing installations keep their preferences. Hiding a feature does not delete its data.

Control what is captured

Pause capture or use an incognito session. In Privacy settings, exclude applications and adjust sensitive-content filters. Password managers are excluded by default and concealed clipboard content is respected. Detection is heuristic: review what you copy before exporting or sharing.

Back up and recover

In Settings → Storage, choose a backup destination and enable scheduled backups if desired. New encrypted backups include text, images, files, original dates, pins, archived clips, spaces, sessions and snippets.

  1. Choose Export recovery key… and store that key separately from your backups, for example in a password manager or a separate encrypted drive.
  2. On the same Mac, use Restore from backup…. The app can use its Keychain key.
  3. On another Mac, or if the original Keychain is unavailable, use Restore with recovery key… and select the matching key and backup.
  4. Read the restoration summary. It reports restored items, existing items and attachments absent from older backup formats. A failed restoration is reported explicitly.

Anyone with both the backup and its recovery key can read its contents. If the Keychain key and recovery key are both lost, the developer cannot decrypt the backup. Keep the original backup until you have checked the restored data.

Backups are limited to 512 MiB per encrypted archive. Larger archives report an error rather than silently dropping items. The recovery-key file is plain Base64 containing a 32-byte key; it is not password protected. Backup encryption uses the synchronizable iCloud Keychain key even when history sync is off. Only the key may sync through Keychain; history is uploaded only when you choose a synchronized backup folder or enable history sync.

Older text-only backups cannot recover image or file bytes that were never included. Unencrypted text/CSV/JSON exports and files you share are outside the protection of the encrypted backup.

Use iCloud on your Macs

Enable iCloud Drive and iCloud Keychain on each Mac using the same Apple Account, then enable sync in Klypto. Sync includes the complete non-sensitive text history, with dates, pins and archive state. Images, files, spaces and sessions stay local; use a full backup to move them.

Changes and deletions are merged between devices as iCloud delivers files. Changes to the same text are resolved consistently; edits producing different text are preserved as separate clips. A later offline metadata change can win. A clip deliberately copied again after a known deletion can return. The last successful sync time only changes when the full cycle succeeds. Read or decryption failures leave the remote data intact and appear in Settings.

Sync is not a backup: deletions propagate. Disabling sync keeps encrypted files in iCloud Drive. The old sync.json file is retained during migration. Deletion markers remain in those files to prevent older Macs from bringing removed clips back. To remove all cloud data, disable sync on every Mac before removing Klypto’s files in iCloud Drive. A replica larger than 64 MiB reports an error rather than silently omitting clips.

Troubleshooting

Support

Use Help → Report a Bug… to open an email draft with app version and system details. Review its contents before sending. Clipboard contents are not automatically attached. Help and this privacy policy are bundled with Klypto and available offline.

Understand Klypto’s status

The bottom of the window and palette shows whether capture is active, paused or excluded for the last external app used. Hover for the affected app and explanation. Incognito and disabling all capture types have their own states. Active capture still respects privacy filters and content-dependent capture rules.

A Backup or iCloud sync warning opens Storage settings. Errors include an explanation and a relevant action: retry, choose a folder, open System Settings to check iCloud or Keychain, or review large attachments. Technical details can be expanded. An inaccessible backup folder no longer silently changes the destination. A successful operation clears its error; an interrupted operation never reports success. Sync can be disabled even when iCloud is unavailable.
